collins_philosophers — Collins philosopher networks (1998)

Description

Networks of personal relationships among philosophers and other intellectuals throughout world history, as coded by W. de Nooy from the diagrams of R. Collins's book "The Sociology of Philosophies: A Global Theory of Intellectual Change" (1998). The book traces intellectual networks in China, India, Japan, the Islamic world, Jewish thought, Greece and Europe, from antiquity to the twentieth century. Nodes are philosophers (and some non-philosophers, such as politicians or patrons, who appear in the diagrams), and there are two networks with the same nodes:

  • acquaintance: an undirected edge connects two persons who knew each other (acquaintanceship ties).
  • master_pupil: a directed edge from $i$ to $j$ means that $i$ was a master (teacher) of $j$.

Ties are signed: the edge property value is 2 for a positive tie, 1 for a probable tie, and -2 for a negative tie (a conflictual relationship), as coded in the source (see the book's diagrams for the meaning of the codes). Three master-pupil ties that refer to persons missing from the list of philosophers are omitted.

The nodes have the following properties:

  • name: the label of the person, as coded (e.g. "CONFUCIUS", "1 Teng Hsi").
  • info: a short description of the person (e.g. "Confucian", "lawyer/debater").
  • date: the date of the person's generation, as a year (negative for BCE; NaN if not coded).
  • stature: the stature of the person (1: major philosopher, 2: secondary philosopher, 3: minor philosopher, 4: non-philosopher, 5: major non-philosopher; -1 if not coded).
  • school: the school or group of the person (e.g. "Confucian school", "Mohists"), empty if none is coded.

The data are distributed as a relational database; de Nooy notes that in case of doubt about the codes, one should consult the diagrams in the book.1
