costa_rica_visits — Visiting ties among families in Turrialba, Costa Rica (1948)
- Description
Visiting relations among families in two rural neighborhoods (Attiro and San Juan Sur) of the Turrialba region in Costa Rica, from a large field study performed in 1948 by C. P. Loomis and collaborators on the impact of formal and informal social systems on social change. Nodes are families, and a directed edge represents frequent visits from one family to another (the number of visits was not recorded), classified as ordinary visits, visits among kin, or visits among ritual kin (between godparent and godchild). For San Juan Sur, there is also a network of the answers of the (heads of) families to the question "In case of a death in the family, whom would you notify first?". The investigators classified the families into family-friendship groupings on substantive (ethnographic) criteria. The data were distributed on the Pajek datasets page of the book Exploratory Social Network Analysis with Pajek (de Nooy, Mrvar and Batagelj), from which this version was obtained.1
attiro: visiting ties among 60 families in Attiro.san_juan_sur: visiting ties among 75 families in San Juan Sur.san_juan_sur_death: the families notified first in case of a death, among the same 75 families in San Juan Sur (one edge appears twice in the source); an edge presumably points from a family to a family it named in reply to the question (the direction is not documented in the source files).
The networks have the following properties:
- Nodes:
name, the identifier of the family;grouping, the ethnographic family-friendship grouping (San Juan Sur: nine groupings, numbered 1 to 9; Attiro: the documentation describes six groupings numbered 1 to 6, but the values in the source file are 0, 1, 4, 5, 7 and 10);status(San Juan Sur only), the social status group of the family, from 1 to 14, indicating the average importance of its members (higher values represent higher status);leader(San Juan Sur only), whether the family contains a prestige leader, i.e. a person who received more than 10 nominations within the community to the question "Which persons would you pick to represent you and the people of this place on a commission?". - Edges:
kind(visiting networks only), the kind of visit (1: ordinary, 2: among kin, 3: among ritual kin).
