french_financial_elite — French financial elite (1990)

Description

Relationships among 28 members of the French financial elite, collected by C. Kadushin in 1990. Kadushin collected data from 127 members of the elite, used several criteria to determine the top 28, and recorded their answers to questions about who was influential, who belonged to the elite, and who were their friends, together with information on their backgrounds and characteristics. The data were distributed by L. C. Freeman on his network data page at the University of California, Irvine (no longer online), from which this version was obtained via the Internet Archive.

The network has three directed layers (relations), in which an edge (i, j) indicates that person i named person j in response to the questions:

  • WHO INFLUENCES YOU
  • WHO IS IN THE ELITE
  • WHO ARE YOUR FRIENDS (this relation is symmetric in the data, and appears as reciprocal edges)

The network has the following properties:

  • Nodes: name, the label of the person; and the 24 attributes recorded by Kadushin, as integer codes (-1 if missing): birthdate, birthplace, sciencepoly, polytech, polyyear, university, normal-sch, ena, enayear, inspec-gen, igyear, cabinet, finance-min, party, religion, masons, zipcode, socialreg, elitevote, eliteprom, prestige, fathers-lev, clubs, topboards. The codes are not documented with the data; they refer to e.g. the year of birth, attendance of elite schools (Sciences Po, École polytechnique, École normale supérieure, ENA) and the year of graduation, membership in the Inspection générale des finances, ministerial cabinets and the finance ministry, political party, religion, freemasonry, postal code of residence, listing in the social register, number of votes and prominence as elite, club memberships, and board memberships, as described by Kadushin (1995).
  • Edges: layer, the relation.
