galesburg_physicians — Galesburg physicians (1955)

Description

Friendship and discussion ties among 31 physicians in Galesburg (Illinois, USA), from the Columbia University drug study of J. S. Coleman, E. Katz and H. Menzel on the diffusion of a new drug (gammanym, a pseudonym for tetracycline) in the mid-1950s. The researchers recorded the date at which each physician first prescribed the drug, and asked the physicians to name three doctors whom they considered personal friends, and three doctors with whom they would choose to discuss medical matters. The data were taken from Knoke and Burt (1983), who used the archives of the original authors. Each edge points from the physician making the nomination to the nominated one. The data were distributed on the Pajek datasets page of the book Exploratory Social Network Analysis with Pajek (de Nooy, Mrvar and Batagelj), from which this version was obtained. The Pajek site also distributes a combined undirected network of the 17 physicians who adopted the drug, which is not included here. The data of all four towns of the same study, in the preparation of R. S. Burt (with 35 physicians and 86 friendship ties in Galesburg, and also the advice relation), are in the entry physician_trust.

  • friendship: the friendship nominations.
  • discussion: the discussion nominations.

The networks have the following properties:

  • Nodes: name, the identifier of the physician; adoption_time, the number of months between the introduction of the drug and its first prescription by the physician (-1 for the 14 physicians who did not adopt it).
