kapferer_tailor — Kapferer tailor shop (1972)
- Description
Interactions among 39 workers of a tailor shop in a town of Zambia (then Northern Rhodesia), observed by the anthropologist B. Kapferer over a period of ten months, during extended negotiations for higher wages. Interactions were recorded at two times, seven months apart, each over a period of one month. An abortive strike occurred after the first set of observations, and a successful strike after the second. This extended version of the data was distributed by T. Snijders with the SIENA software.
Two types of interaction were recorded:
sociational_1andsociational_2: "sociational" (friendship and socio-emotional) interactions, at the first and second time, respectively. These are undirected.instrumental_1andinstrumental_2: "instrumental" (work- and assistance-related) interactions, at the first and second time, respectively. These are directed.
Nodes are workers, and an edge connects two workers between whom an interaction of the given type was observed. In the directed networks, an edge $(i, j)$ corresponds to the entry in row $i$ and column $j$ of the source matrix; the meaning of the direction is not documented.
The networks have the following properties:
- Nodes:
status, the job category of the worker, in decreasing order of prestige according to a survey among employees (Kapferer 1972, pp. 55-59): 1: head tailor, 2: cutter, 3: line 1 tailor, 4: button machiner, 5: line 3 tailor, 6: ironer, 7: cotton boy, 8: line 2 tailor;lyashi, whether the worker is Lyashi, the most central individual;high_status, whether the worker has a high status job.
