krackhardt_kite — Krackhardt's kite (1990)
- Description
A small illustrative network of ten actors introduced by David Krackhardt, who called it a "kite structure", to show that the three classic measures of centrality can identify different actors as the most central. It is a constructed example, not empirical data. In this version, Diane has the largest degree (6), Heather has the largest betweenness (she is the only connection of Ike and Jane to the rest of the network), and Fernando and Garth have the largest closeness. The actor names and the interpretation of the edges as pairs of actors who regularly interact with each other are those of V. Krebs' popular introduction to social network analysis (orgnet.com), from which the network is usually reproduced. The data were obtained from the R package igraphdata, which also provides the standard drawing of the network.
The network has the following properties:
- Nodes:
name, the one-letter label of the actor (A to J);first_name, the name of the actor;xandy, the coordinates of the actor in the standard drawing of the network.
