modern_math — Modern math diffusion among school superintendents (1958-1963)
- Description
Friendship choices among school superintendents in Allegheny County (Pennsylvania, USA), from R. O. Carlson's study of the diffusion of the "modern math" teaching method in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The superintendents of school systems combining elementary and secondary programs, who had been at least two years in office, were interviewed (61 of 68), and 51 of them had adopted the method by 1963. Among other things, they were asked "Among the chief school administrators in Allegheny County, who are your three best friends?". The network contains the 38 interviewed superintendents who adopted the method and were in office at least one year before the first adoption. The friendship choices of superintendents who did not receive any choices themselves were not included by the researcher, so they appear as isolated nodes. The data were distributed on the Pajek datasets page of the book Exploratory Social Network Analysis with Pajek (de Nooy, Mrvar and Batagelj), from which this version was obtained.
directed: the friendship choices, as directed edges from the superintendent making the choice to the chosen one.symmetrized: the symmetrized network, in which two superintendents are connected if at least one of them chose the other as a friend.
The networks have the following properties:
- Nodes:
name, the identifier of the superintendent ("v1" is the first adopter);adoption, the year of adoption of the method by the superintendent's school system (1: 1958, 2: 1959, 3: 1960, and so on).
