paul_revere — Paul Revere's Boston organisations (1775)

Description

Memberships of 254 persons in colonial Boston in seven organisations at the time of the American Revolution (the St Andrews Lodge of freemasons, the Loyal Nine, the North Caucus, the Long Room Club, the Tea Party participants, the Boston Committee of Correspondence and the London Enemies list), from Appendix D of David Hackett Fischer's book "Paul Revere's Ride" (1994). The membership matrix was transcribed by Kieran Healy in 2013 for his analysis of how metadata can be used to identify Paul Revere as a central figure, and distributed with that analysis and in the UCINET datasets collection (University of Manchester). Healy's transcription contains errors in the memberships of several persons; a corrected matrix, transcribed again from Fischer's appendix by C. Brunson, replaced it in Healy's repository in 2015 (with 319 instead of 334 memberships; e.g. 16 persons are common to the London Enemies list and the North Caucus, not 20).

  • membership: bipartite network of persons and the organisations they belonged to, from the original (2013, uncorrected) transcription, as distributed by UCINET.
  • co_membership: one-mode projection of membership, connecting persons who belonged to the same organisations, as distributed by UCINET.
  • membership_corrected: bipartite network of persons and organisations, from the corrected (2015) transcription.
  • whigs: the subnetwork of membership_corrected used by Brunson (2015), which excludes the Tea Party participants and the London Enemies list (treated as non-group affiliations in the data preparation of Brunson's bitriad R package), and the persons not belonging to any of the remaining five organisations (136 persons, 160 memberships).

The networks have the following properties:

  • Nodes: name, the name of the person, as "Surname.Firstname", or of the organisation; is_organization (bipartite networks), true for the organisations.
  • Edges: weight (co_membership only), the number of organisations shared by the two persons.1
