pira_gill — Provisional IRA members (1970-1998)
- Description
Networks of relationships among active members of the Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA) between 1970 and 1998, divided into time periods, from data collected at the International Center for the Study of Terrorism, Pennsylvania State University, and analysed by Gill et al. (2014). An edge connects two members if they had at least one of four types of relationship: involvement in a PIRA activity together, friendship before joining the PIRA, blood relation, or relation through marriage. The networks
period1,period2,period3,period4_5andperiod6correspond to the time periods of the source (periods 4 and 5 are combined), and contain the members active in each period, identified by an anonymous code inname. The vertex properties give characteristics of the members, coded as 0/1 unless stated otherwise:
gender, university(attended university),marital_status,age_at_recruitment(in years), brigade membership (antrim_brigade,derry_brigade,armagh_brigade,down_brigade,tyrone_brigade, andfermanagh_brigadefrom period 2 on), and their activities in the period:vio(violent),nonvio(non-violent),vforop(violent foreign operation),senior(senior leader),gun(gunman),ied_c(IED constructor),ied_p(IED planter),forop(foreign operation) androb(robbery). The value 99999 denotes missing data. Data distributed by the UCINET datasets collection (University of Manchester).1
