quakers — Early Quaker social network (17th century)
- Description
Social network of 119 early members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in seventeenth-century Britain and its colonies, a subset of the data of the Six Degrees of Francis Bacon (SDFB) project, published with the Programming Historian tutorial "Exploring and Analyzing Network Data with Python" by J. R. Ladd, J. Otis, C. N. Warren and S. Weingart. SDFB reconstructs the social network of early modern Britain (1500-1700) from the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (ODNB): relationships are first inferred statistically from the co-occurrence of names in the ODNB biographies, and then curated by contributors. Nodes are persons, and an undirected edge indicates a relationship (of an unspecified kind) between two persons in the SDFB data.
The nodes have the following properties:
name: the name of the person (e.g. "William Penn", "George Fox").historical_significance: a short description of the person (e.g. "religious writer", "Quaker preacher").gender: "male" or "female", as given in the source.birthanddeath: the years of birth and death.sdfb_id: the identifier of the person in the SDFB data.1
