ragusa_genealogy — Ragusan nobility genealogy (12th-16th century)

Description

The genealogy of the nobility of Ragusa (now Dubrovnik, Croatia) from the 12th to the 16th century, compiled into a GEDCOM file by P. Dremelj (1999) from the data of I. Mahnken's study of the Ragusan patriciate. In Ragusa, all political power was in the hands of the male nobles older than 18 years, members of the Great Council. The nobility evolved from the 12th through the 14th century and was finally established by statute in 1332, after which no new family was accepted until the large earthquake of 1667. Because of decreasing numbers and the lack of noble families in the neighboring areas under Turkish control, the noble families became more and more closely related, and marriages between relatives were frequent. Nodes are persons; directed edges point from parents to their children, and there is an edge from husband to wife for each marriage. The data were distributed on the Pajek datasets page of the book Exploratory Social Network Analysis with Pajek (de Nooy, Mrvar and Batagelj), from which this version was obtained.

  • ragusa: the complete genealogy.
  • gondola_petrus: the descendants of one nobleman, Petrus Gondola (a selection of the complete genealogy).

The networks have the following properties:

  • Nodes: name, the name of the person; sex ("M", "F", "U" or empty); birth and death, the year (or date) of birth and death, as given in the source (empty if unknown).
  • Edges: kind, the kind of relation ("father" or "mother", for edges from a parent to a child, or "marriage", for edges from husband to wife); date, the date of the marriage, as given in the source (empty if unknown or not a marriage).
