sa_companies — South African company directors (1905)

Description

A small bipartite network of the directorships held in 1905 by six leading financiers of South Africa in five gold, diamond and finance companies: De Beers Consolidated, the Premier (Transvaal) Diamond Company, Rand Mines, Consolidated Goldfields and the British South Africa Company (the "Chartered Company"). The data are from the chapter on the financier of J. A. Hobson's The Evolution of Modern Capitalism (new and revised edition of 1906), which gives a table of the directorships of South African financiers in 1905, constructed from the Directory of Directors and the Stock Exchange Year Book of 1905, and discusses the interlocks it shows among the main companies (pp. 270-271 in the printing of 1919). The network is the subset of that table transcribed in Cory Brunson's bitriad R package (data set southafrica1905); the other directors and companies of Hobson's table, and the numbers of directorships it gives, are not included.

Nodes are persons and companies, and an edge connects a person to a company of which they were a director (Wernher and Beit were life governors of De Beers).

The network has the following properties:

  • (Node) name: the name of the person (surname and initials, as in the bitriad package; Hobson gives J. C. Wernher and J. R. Maguire) or of the company.
  • (Node) is_company: whether the node is a company.
