scotland_interlocks — Scottish corporate interlocks (1904-1905)
- Description
Interlocking directorates among the 108 largest joint stock companies in Scotland in 1904-1905 (64 non-financial firms, 8 banks, 14 insurance companies and 22 investment and property companies), compiled by W. de Nooy from the appendix of the book The Anatomy of Scottish Capital by J. Scott and M. Hughes. The bipartite network connects each of the 136 multiple directors listed there (persons sitting on more than one of these boards) to the boards on which they sit. Sixteen of the companies share no director with the others, and appear as isolated nodes. (The source documentation mentions 356 affiliations, and two directors with a single board, while the data file contains 358 affiliations and no such directors.) The data were distributed on the Pajek datasets page of the book Exploratory Social Network Analysis with Pajek (de Nooy, Mrvar and Batagelj), from which this version was obtained.
The network has the following properties:
- Nodes:
name, the name of the company or director;is_company, whether the node is a company (otherwise a director);industry(companies only, 0 for directors), the industry type of the company (1: oil & mining, 2: railway, 3: engineering & steel, 4: electricity & chemicals, 5: domestic products, 6: banks, 7: insurance, 8: investment);capital(companies only, 0 for directors), the total capital or deposits of the company, in thousands of pounds sterling.
