slumlords — Slumlord collusion (2010)

Description

Networks of a group of "slumlords", real-estate investors who were convicted of housing violations in multiple buildings (including sewage leaks, lead contamination, evictions of complaining tenants, and unpaid utility bills), as mapped by a small not-for-profit economic justice organisation with the help of Valdis Krebs (orgnet.com) to assist the city attorney. The networks correspond to the figures of the step-by-step analysis described by Krebs, and were reconstructed at the University of Manchester. Nodes are persons (with pseudonymous first names) and businesses (limited liability companies), named in the vertex property name.

  • transactions: directed network of real-estate transactions (property sold from one company to another) among 5 companies (Fig. 1).
  • ownership: bipartite network of 11 owners and the 5 companies they own (Fig. 2); is_business marks the companies.
  • co_ownership: one-mode projection of ownership, connecting owners of the same company.
  • family: family ties among the 11 owners (Fig. 3).
  • extended_family: family ties among 13 persons, including relatives who are not owners (Fig. 4).
  • business_interests: bipartite network of 13 persons and 9 businesses and properties, connected by business affiliations or ownership (Fig. 5); is_business marks the businesses.
  • business_ties: ties among the 9 businesses and properties that have affiliated persons or owners in common.

Where the two directions of the undirected source matrices differ, the tie is included.1
