accounting_firm — Webster accounting firm (1991-1992)

Description

Work and social ties among the 24 members of a small accounting firm, collected by C. M. Webster in 1991 and 1992 to compare observed and reported relational data: six were partners in the firm, three were managers, nine were staff accountants and six were support staff. Social interactions were observed by ad libitum sampling in a wide range of settings, and work assignment sheets were used to determine who had worked with whom. Then each individual was asked to report with whom he or she had socialized and worked. The data were distributed by L. C. Freeman on his network data page at the University of California, Irvine (no longer online), from which this version was obtained via the Internet Archive.

Nodes are the members of the firm. The four relations are given as separate networks, in which an edge connects two members who were observed to interact socially or to work together (undirected), or a directed edge (i, j) indicates that member i reported socializing or working with member j:

  • observed_social: observed social interactions, undirected.
  • observed_work: observed work together, from the work assignment sheets, undirected.
  • reported_social: socializing reported by i about j, directed.
  • reported_work: work reported by i with j, directed.

The values of the matrices are not documented. The observed relations have nonzero diagonal values, which are represented as self-loops.

The networks have the following properties:

  • Nodes: sex (1: male, 2: female); job (1: partner, 2: manager, 3: accountant, 4: staff member).
  • Edges: weight, the value of the relation (integers).
