bks_interactions — Bernard-Killworth-Sailer informant accuracy networks (1976-1980)

Description

Social interactions in bounded groups, collected by H. R. Bernard, P. D. Killworth and L. Sailer in their studies of the accuracy of informants' recall of their interactions. For each group, they obtained a behavioral measure of the interactions among all actors, and rankings based on the subjects' memory of those interactions (cognitive data). The data were distributed in UCINET format (from the UCINET data collection of S. P. Borgatti, M. G. Everett and L. C. Freeman) on the Pajek datasets page of V. Batagelj and A. Mrvar, from which this version was obtained.

  • frat_behavioral, frat_cognitive: a fraternity at a West Virginia college (58 students who had lived in the fraternity from three months to three years); the behavioral data are the number of times a pair of students were seen in conversation by an unobtrusive observer, who walked through the public areas of the building every fifteen minutes, 21 hours a day, for five days.
  • ham_behavioral, ham_cognitive: 44 amateur (HAM) radio operators; the behavioral data are the radio calls made over a one-month period, as monitored by a voice-activated recording device.
  • off_behavioral, off_cognitive: 40 employees of a small business office; the behavioral data are the observed frequencies of interactions, recorded by an unobtrusive observer who patrolled a fixed route through the office every fifteen minutes during two four-day periods.
  • tec_behavioral, tec_cognitive: 34 members of a technical research group at a West Virginia university; the behavioral data are the interactions recorded by an observer every half-hour during one five-day work week.

In the behavioral networks (undirected), two actors are connected if they were observed interacting, and the edge is weighted by the number of observed interactions. In the cognitive networks (directed), an edge points from the subject to another actor, and is weighted by the subject's ranking of how frequently they interacted in the observation period (the scale of the rankings differs between groups).

The networks have the following properties:

  • Edges: weight, the number of observed interactions (behavioral networks) or the ranking given by the subject (cognitive networks).
