caviar — Caviar drug trafficking network (1994-1996)
- Description
Directed networks of communication among participants in a drug importation network (hashish and cocaine) operating out of Montreal, Canada, targeted by Project Caviar, a joint investigation by the Montreal Police, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and law-enforcement agencies of several other countries between 1994 and 1996. Instead of arresting participants, the investigation used a "seize and wait" strategy: 11 drug consignments were seized over two years, and arrests took place only at the end, making it possible to study the evolution of the network under disruption (Morselli and Petit, 2007).
The data come from evidence submitted during the trials of 22 participants, comprising 4279 paragraphs of transcripts of intercepted telephone conversations. Of the 318 individuals named in them, the 110 who took part in the trafficking operations are included. Nodes are participants (numbered in
name, as in the source), and a directed edge indicates communication from one participant to another, with the edge propertyweightgiving the level of communication activity. The networksphase1tophase11correspond to the 11 two-month phases of the investigation, andfullaggregates all of them. Data reconstructed from the appendix of Morselli's book "Inside Criminal Networks" (2009) by the UCINET datasets collection (University of Manchester).1
