dolphins_laguna — Laguna bottlenose dolphin social network (2012)
- Description
Weighted social network of the resident bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) of Laguna, southern Brazil, a population in which a subset of the dolphins forages in cooperation with local, beach-casting artisanal fishermen, from the study of F. G. Daura-Jorge and collaborators. The data were compiled by M. Cantor and collaborators for a study of nestedness across levels of biological organization, and are distributed in the repository of that study (file
pop_tursiops.txt). Individuals were identified by photo-identification of natural markings on the dorsal fin, and two individuals were considered associated when observed in the same group. Nodes are individuals, and an undirected edge connects two individuals that were observed together at least once, weighted by their association index, the half-weight index (HWI), an estimate of the proportion of time the two individuals spend together (from 0, never seen together, to 1, always together). Only the 35 individuals that were seen in the study area more than three times during the study period are included. The individuals are not identified in the source data. The edges have the property
weight, the half-weight association index.
