fly_medulla — Drosophila optic medulla connectome (2013)
- Description
Directed network of synaptic connections between neurons in the optic medulla of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, reconstructed by Takemura et al. from serial-section transmission electron microscopy of a volume spanning seven medulla columns. Neuron segments were traced semi-automatically and proofread by human annotators. Each edge is one synaptic contact, from the presynaptic to the postsynaptic body, so that a pair of bodies connected by several synapses is joined by parallel edges (33,641 synapses between 1,781 bodies). The bodies include identified neurons (named by cell type) and unidentified "orphan" fragments that could not be traced to a cell.
The network has the following properties:
- Nodes:
name, the cell-type label followed by the body identifier (e.g. "Mi1 ..."), or the body identifier alone for unnamed bodies. - Edges:
pre_x,pre_y,pre_zandpost_x,post_y,post_z, the voxel coordinates of the presynaptic and postsynaptic sites in the image volume;proofreading, the proofreading status of the synapse (e.g. whether the partners reached named or "anchor" bodies, or are both orphans).
The data were obtained from the graph collection of the Open Connectome Project (now NeuroData), whose servers are offline, via the Internet Archive.
