foodweb_ulanowicz — Ulanowicz ecosystem flow networks (1989-2002)

Description

Ecosystem networks of carbon flows (food webs) among the compartments of several aquatic and wetland ecosystems, selected from R. E. Ulanowicz's collection of ecosystem networks (Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, University of Maryland; version of July 22, 2002) and from the ATLSS project (Network Analysis of Trophic Dynamics in South Florida Ecosystems). The original data in SCOR format were converted into Pajek format by V. Batagelj (2003, 2004). Nodes are compartments: living compartments (taxa or groups of taxa), other non-living compartments (e.g. detritus and dissolved or particulate organic carbon), and three special nodes representing the inputs (imports and primary production sources), the outputs (exports) and respiration of the ecosystem. A directed edge points from a donor to a recipient compartment, and is weighted by the flow of carbon between them. The units are those of the original studies (typically milligrams or grams of carbon per square meter, per day or per year), and differ between networks. Some networks have self-loops (flows within a compartment, e.g. cannibalism). The data were distributed in Pajek format on the Pajek datasets page of V. Batagelj and A. Mrvar, from which this version was obtained. The general collection's "Florida" network is not included separately, since it is identical to the ATLSS Florida Bay wet season network (baywet).

  • gramdry: Everglades graminoid marshes, dry season (Ulanowicz et al., 2000).
  • gramwet: Everglades graminoid marshes, wet season (Ulanowicz et al., 2000).
  • mangdry: mangrove estuary of South Florida, dry season (Ulanowicz et al., 1999).
  • mangwet: mangrove estuary of South Florida, wet season (Ulanowicz et al., 1999).

The networks have the following properties:

  • Nodes: name, the name of the compartment; type, the type of compartment (1: living/producing compartment, 2: other compartment, 3: input, 4: output, 5: respiration); biomass, the biomass (standing stock) of the compartment (in the maspalomas and rhode networks, the source gives all biomasses as 1 or 0, i.e. they are not available).
  • Edges: weight, the flow of carbon from the donor to the recipient compartment.
