freeman_eies — Freeman's EIES networks (1978)
- Description
Networks among researchers working on social network analysis, who took part in the Electronic Information Exchange System (EIES) study of S. C. Freeman and L. C. Freeman in 1978, which examined the impact of a computer-based communication system on the relationships among its users. These data are also used as examples in Wasserman and Faust (1994). This version was distributed by T. Opsahl.
time1andtime2: the personal relationships among 48 researchers at the beginning and at the end of the study, respectively. A directed edge (i, j) indicates how researcher i regards researcher j. Only 34 of the 48 researchers appear in the edge lists; the others are isolated nodes.messages: the number of messages sent among 32 of the researchers who used the electronic communication system. A directed edge (i, j) indicates messages sent from i to j. The source data contain self-loops, whose meaning is not documented.
The node numbering of the
messagesnetwork does not necessarily correspond to the one of the other two networks. The networks have the following properties:
time1andtime2: Edges:weight, from 1 to 4 (1: has heard of the person, but not met; 2: has met the person; 3: friend; 4: close personal friend).messages: Nodes:name, the name of the researcher;discipline, the main disciplinary affiliation (1: sociology, 2: anthropology, 3: mathematics or statistics, 4: others);citations, the number of citations of the researcher in the Social Science Citation Index in 1978. Edges:weight, the number of messages.
