giraffes — Captive giraffe social relationships (2007)
- Description
Social relationships among a herd of six adult female giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) living in a large outdoor enclosure, observed for two years by M. J. Bashaw, M. A. Bloomsmith, T. L. Maple and F. B. Bercovitch (according to ICON, at the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park, from April 2002 to April 2004). The authors studied whether giraffes associate randomly, or have social preferences, and found that affiliative interactions, proximity and nearest neighbors were all non-randomly distributed, and consistent across measures and time. The data were distributed by L. C. Freeman on his network data page at the University of California, Irvine (no longer online), from which this version was obtained via the Internet Archive.
The network has three layers (relations), all directed:
Affiliative Interaction: affiliative interactions from giraffe i to giraffe j (integer values).Nearest Neighbor: nearest neighbor scores of giraffe j for giraffe i (non-integer values).Proximity: proximity scores between giraffe i and giraffe j (non-integer values, not symmetric).
The exact definitions of the scores (which appear to be counts and percentages of observations) are given in the original publication, and are not documented with the data.
The network has the following properties:
- Nodes:
name, the name of the giraffe. - Edges:
layer, the relation (see above);weight, the value of the relation.
