human_cranium — Human cranial measurement correlation networks (1973)
- Description
Weighted networks of correlations among cranial measurements of modern humans, from the craniometric data set of W. W. Howells. The data were compiled by M. Cantor and collaborators for a study of nestedness across levels of biological organization, and are distributed in the repository of that study (files
ind_craniam.txt,ind_craniaf.txtandind_craniaeurope.txt). Following the approach of S. I. Perez and collaborators for detecting modules in complex phenotypes, nodes are 44 anatomically defined cranial measurements (distances between craniometric landmarks), and an undirected edge connects every pair of measurements, weighted by the Pearson correlation coefficient between them, which can be negative (all networks are complete graphs with signed weights). The measurements are not identified in the source data, but are the same, and in the same order, in the three networks.males: correlations among the 44 measurements averaged per population, over 30 recent modern human populations distributed worldwide (1,367 male individuals).females: the same, for 1,823 female individuals.europe_males: correlations among the measurements of 164 individual males from three European samples (Norse, medieval Oslo; Zalavar, Hungary; and Berg, Carinthia, Austria).
The edges have the property
weight, the Pearson correlation coefficient.
