jakarta_bombing_2009 — Jakarta hotel bombings network (2009)
- Description
Networks of relationships among 28 individuals associated with the bombings of the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels in Jakarta, Indonesia, on 17 July 2009 (Wikipedia), attributed to the network of Noordin Mohammad Top, from the John Jay & ARTIS Transnational Terrorism Database (JJATT). The data were coded from open sources, and were made available in matrix form by the UCINET datasets collection (University of Manchester).
Nodes are individuals (labelled by their JJATT identifier in
name). The networkspre_attackandpost_attackcontain the relationships before and after the attack, with the edge propertyweightgiving the strength of the tie: 1 = acquaintances or distant family ties (interaction limited to radical organisation activities), 2 = friends or moderately close family ties (including co-workers and roommates), operational or organisational leadership, or operational ties (e.g. having worked closely together on a bombing), 3 = close friends or family, tight-knit operational cliques (a few ties have values 5 or 6, which are not described in the source documentation). Thekinshipnetwork contains kinship ties, with the edge propertykinshipcoding the type: 1 = in-laws, 2 = cousins, 3 = siblings, 4 = parent/child, 5 = married, 6 = grandparent/grandchild, 7 = significant other (cells coded 99 in the source matrix, whose meaning is not documented, are omitted). The source matrices are meant to be symmetric; where the two directions differ, the tie with the larger value is used. The JJATT operation matrix is not included.1
