mouse_visual_cortex — Mouse visual cortex neurons (2011)

Description

Directed networks of synaptic connections in the primary visual cortex of the mouse, from Bock et al. The orientation preferences of neurons were first characterized in vivo by two-photon calcium imaging; the same tissue was then imaged by large-scale serial-section transmission electron microscopy, and the axons of functionally characterized pyramidal neurons were traced to their postsynaptic targets. Edges point from a presynaptic (characterized pyramidal) neuron to its postsynaptic target, and are weighted by the number of synapses.

  • full: all reconstructed connections: 195 nodes, including 13 characterized pyramidal neurons and their postsynaptic targets, which are mostly dendritic fragments (138) and cell bodies within the EM volume (44).
  • subset: a smaller network of 29 nodes (11 characterized pyramidal neurons and 18 targets), labelled in the source as corresponding to Figure 5b of the publication (the targets receiving input from the characterized neurons shown there).

The networks have the following properties:

  • Nodes: type, the kind of node ("Characterized pyramidal neuron", "Dendritic fragment", or "Cell body in EM volume"); target_type, whether the node is an inhibitory or excitatory postsynaptic target ("NA" for the characterized neurons).
  • Edges: weight, the number of synapses.

The data were obtained from the graph collection of the Open Connectome Project (now NeuroData), whose servers are offline, via the Internet Archive.
