sampson_monastery — Sampson's monastery (1968)

Description

Affect relations among a group of novices preparing to join a monastic order in a New England monastery, from the ethnographic study of S. F. Sampson. The novices were asked to name the three peers they liked most and the three they liked least (first, second and third choices). The relations were measured at five moments in time; the fourth measurement (T4) took place one week before four of the novices were expelled from the monastery. Based on his observations, Sampson divided the novices into four groups: the Young Turks, who arrived in a period of change and questioned the practices of the monastery; the Loyal Opposition, who entered the monastery first and defended those practices; the Outcasts, who were not accepted in the group; and an interstitial group that did not take sides. The data were distributed on the Pajek datasets page of the book Exploratory Social Network Analysis with Pajek (de Nooy, Mrvar and Batagelj), from which this version was obtained.1

  • longitudinal: the choices of 25 novices at the five time points. Each edge points from the novice making the choice to the chosen peer, with one edge per time point at which the choice was made.
  • T4: the most and least liked peer of each of the 18 novices present at the fourth measurement, with edges pointing from the novice making the choice to the chosen peer.

The networks have the following properties:

  • Nodes: name, the name of the novice; cloisterville, whether the novice attended the minor seminary of "Cloisterville" before coming to the monastery; faction (T4 only), Sampson's classification into factions (1: Young Turks, 2: Loyal Opposition, 3: Outcasts, 4: interstitial group). The presence intervals given for some novices in the source file are not included.
  • Edges: weight, the signed rank of the choice (longitudinal: 3, 2 and 1 for the first, second and third most liked peer, and -3, -2 and -1 for the first, second and third least liked; T4: 1 for the most liked and -1 for the least liked peer); time (longitudinal only), the time point (1 to 5) of the choice.
