se_asian_terrorists — Southeast Asian terrorist attack series (2005)

Description

Networks of relationships among 108 individuals involved in terrorist attacks in Indonesia, from the "Southeast Asian aggregate attack series" of the John Jay & ARTIS Transnational Terrorism Database (JJATT), which collapses the individual Indonesian cases (e.g. the Christmas Eve 2000, Bali 2002, Australian embassy 2004 and Bali 2005 bombings) into a single series of relations, useful to study the behavioural and compositional changes of one terrorist network, largely associated with Jemaah Islamiyah. The data were coded from open sources, and were made available in matrix form by the UCINET datasets collection (University of Manchester). Nodes are individuals, labelled by their JJATT identifier in name. The networks are:

  • tie_strength: social ties, with the edge property weight giving their strength: 1 = acquaintances or distant family ties (interaction limited to radical organisation activities), 2 = friends or moderately close family ties (including co-workers and roommates), operational or organisational leadership, or operational ties (e.g. having worked closely together on a bombing), 3 = close friends or family, tight-knit operational cliques.
  • kinship: kinship ties, with the edge property kinship coding the type: 1 = in-laws, 2 = cousins, 3 = siblings, 4 = parent/child, 5 = married, 6 = grandparent/grandchild, 7 = significant other.
  • operation_16, operation_24, operation_36, operation_43 and operation_44: co-participation in the JJATT operations with these identifiers. Comparing with the individual JJATT cases, operation 16 corresponds to the Christmas Eve 2000 bombings, 24 to the Bali 2002 bombings, 43 to the Australian embassy bombing in 2004, and 44 to the Bali 2005 bombings; operation 36 is not identified in the source.

The source matrices are meant to be symmetric; in the few cases where the two directions differ, the tie is included. The source also contains matrices of the years in which ties were formed and ended, which are not included.1
