sp_malawi_village — Rural Malawi village contacts (2019-2020)
- Description
Temporal network of close-range proximity contacts among 86 inhabitants of Mdoliro, a village in the Dowa district (Central Region) of Malawi, measured with wearable proximity sensors by the SocioPatterns collaboration, as part of a Child and Youth Development Study funded by UNICEF Malawi. The study ran from 16 December 2019 to 10 January 2020; children, adolescents and adult caregivers of 28 households wore a sensor pinned to the front of their clothing, and sensors exchanged low-power radio packets that are only received at distances of about 1-1.5 m (attenuation threshold of -75 dBm). Two individuals are in contact during a 20-second interval if their sensors exchanged at least one packet during it. Participants were asked to remove the sensors overnight; night-time contacts and periods during which a sensor did not move (according to its accelerometer) were removed from the data. The released data cover the 14 days from 22 December 2019 to 4 January 2020, and include both contacts within and between households. The demographic metadata (age, gender, household) described in the paper are not released.
Nodes are individuals, and each edge is a contact between two individuals active during one 20-second interval, so that two individuals are connected by as many edges as the number of intervals in which they were in contact. The network has the following properties:
id: the anonymous identifier of the individual (1 to 86).time: the end of the 20-second interval in which the contact was active, in seconds. The origin of the times is the first recorded contact, on 22 December 2019 (its time of day is not stated in the source).date: the date of the contact (YYYY-MM-DD). The source gives only the day of the month; the month and year were inferred from the study period.
