spanish_cocaine — Spanish cocaine trafficking groups (2007-2009)

Description

Networks of communication among members of four groups involved in cocaine trafficking in Spain, reconstructed by Giménez-Salinas Framis (2011) from police wiretapping and meetings registered by police investigations of these organisations between 2007 and 2009. Nodes are individuals (vertex property name, with anonymised initials), and an edge indicates communication between them. The edge property weight, present where the source matrix has values other than one, is not documented (it may represent the level of communication activity). Where the two directions in the source matrix differ, the tie is included, with the larger value. The four networks correspond to the police operations:

  • mambo (31 nodes): started in 2006, a group of Colombian citizens introducing cocaine to be adulterated and distributed in Madrid, acting as a wholesale supplier between South American importers and Madrid retailers, with cocaine smuggled from Colombia through Brazil and Uruguay.
  • juanes (51 nodes): a group detected in 2009 smuggling cocaine from Mexico to be distributed in Madrid, in close cooperation with an organisation laundering the income (estimated at EUR 60 million).
  • jake (38 nodes): a group investigated in 2008, a wholesale supplier and retail distributor of cocaine and heroin in a large distribution zone in Madrid traditionally controlled by Roma clans.
  • acero (25 nodes): started in 2007, a smaller family-based group led by a woman, distributing cocaine in Madrid supplied by groups based in north-western Spain, with its own money-laundering procedures.
