suffragettes — UK suffragette movement (1906-1914)

Description

Networks of the militant suffragette movement in the United Kingdom (1906-1914), collected by Gemma Edwards and Nick Crossley at the University of Manchester. The relational data were constructed from historical archives, including letters and speeches of suffragettes, and from secondary sources such as autobiographies and newspaper accounts (in particular, letters give dated information on who was writing to whom). Data distributed by the UCINET datasets collection (University of Manchester). Nodes are persons, named in the vertex property name (a few names occur more than once, for different persons). The networks are:

  • visits_1908 to visits_1913: co-location of 85 persons through visits in each year, with the edge property weight giving the number of co-occurrences.
  • blathwayt_covisitation: co-visitation network of the same 85 persons (visits to the Blathwayt family home, Eagle House, near Bath), with weight the number of co-visits.
  • pankhurst_inner_circle: pre-existing ties among 112 persons in the circle of Emmeline Pankhurst (where the two directions in the source matrix differ, the tie is included).
  • bristol_bath_militant_acts: bipartite network of 13 suffragettes and 18 militant acts in Bristol and Bath in which they took part (the vertex property is_act marks the acts, which are named by their date and a description).
  • bristol_bath_militant_acts_projection: one-mode projection of the above, with weight the number of shared acts.
  • bristol_bath_events: co-attendance of 49 persons at events in Bristol and Bath.
  • arrests: bipartite network of 1216 persons and the 398 dates and places at which they were arrested (the vertex property is_arrest marks the arrest events, named by their date and an abbreviated location).
  • co_arrests: one-mode network of the same 1216 persons connected by co-arrests, with weight as given by the source. This matrix is not exactly the projection of arrests (its values, up to 563, are not documented).

The diagonal entries of the one-mode matrices (e.g. the number of visits of each person) are not included.1
