celegans_varshney — C. elegans hermaphrodite somatic neurons (2011)

Description

Directed network of the somatic nervous system of the adult hermaphrodite nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, as compiled by Varshney et al. from the serial-section electron micrographs of White et al. (1986), with revisions and additions from new reconstructions. It comprises the 279 non-pharyngeal neurons that make synapses (the 20 pharyngeal neurons, and CANL/R and VC06, which make no synapses, are excluded). There is one edge for each pair of neurons and type of connection: chemical synapses, directed from the presynaptic to the postsynaptic neuron, and gap junctions (electrical synapses), which are symmetric. Edges are weighted by the number of synapses.

The network has the following properties:

  • Nodes: name, the neuron name; cell_class, the neuron class (e.g. "VA" for VA01 to VA12); role, "S" for sensory, "M" for motor, or "NA" (interneurons and others); neurotransmitters, the known neurotransmitters ("Ach", "GABA", "DA", "5-HT", or "NA" if unknown); soma_pos, the position of the cell body along the anterior-posterior body axis (0 at the head, 1 at the tail).
  • Edges: synapse_type, "C" for chemical synapse and "E" for gap junction; weight, the number of synapses.

The OpenConnectome file is labelled as the "pharynx" network, but contains the somatic (non-pharyngeal) network described above. The data were obtained from the graph collection of the Open Connectome Project (now NeuroData), whose servers are offline, via the Internet Archive.
